Well, this may just be the inspiration for me to refinish my bass. I'm thinking about filling in the old switch holes, strip it back to bare wood, silver leaf on black, with a new black bridge and tuners.... Hmmmm. That might be interesting!
NOW you're talking,
That sounds like it'd be magnificent!
We definitely need PICS...
Of course I'll document it if I do it. I do have a few other things to do before I give it a go but having watched a couple of videos on gold/silver/copper leafing guitars I'm certain it's do-able.
Could be back to the drawing board.... I just measured the string spacing. 5 strings, 61mm in total. I can't find any bridge with such small spacing and wouldn't want the gold plated one there with silver.
If you post the spec/brand of the bridge
I'll keep an eaye out and see if one pops up on the gear pages, if you like?
It's not like I don't cruise them already...
I finally found me a bridge to suit - a Schaller 2000 series. Very nice and very expensive coming in at about 120 euros...... Whilst I'm sure that it will be better quality than the current one and also change the tone a bit, I really don't think I can justify it for purely aesthetic reasons. I'm certain that the tonal differences would be just that; different with no clear winner.
I think that I'm going to rethink the finish. It's not a model that can get away with gold leaf and I couldn't bear silver leaf with a gold plated bridge so I might just keep it simple and strip it back and oil it (I'll think about a stain once we get there). I have an idea to modify the headstock shape; the 5 in a line reverse T-bird head is huge, I'm thinking of cutting it short and going 2+3. I can buy some decent Gotoh tuners at a good price.
My bass now consists of a tin full of small bits that rattles when you shake it, a decapitated neck and body. It's heat gun time!
Game FULLY on!
I'm really looking forward to seeing how this progresses bud
May I suggest starting a new thread to document it?
A plan like this most definitely deserves one...
Mhm... I do have a little weak spot for one of those Vintage Precision Bass things Harley Benton does...
Late to the party.
But for what it's worth, I think that this WINS.
You have enviable creativity Suze.
That's a lovely compliment.
That said, if you ever fancy a straight trade of my enviable creativity for your enviable guitar collection
Then you know where I am, right?
HNGD! That finish is so many levels of awesome!
There seems to be a mistake though, I can only count 4 strings... and the pickups looks odd... and the neck is very long.. I'm starting to suspect this isn't a guitar at all!
Edit: Someone necro:d the thread but I'm ok with it.
Once again not to my taste, I like to relic slowly over many years. But your happy and that is what matters. Good job.
I mean ... I know where you are, right
