    Or do, whatever.

If understand correctly I should introduce myself in here. Well to begin with I lack all sense of netiquette so I appreciate any helpful pointers. I don't have much of an online presence (no social networks, no instant messaging, NOTHING!) and rarely join forums.

I am however very passionate about the things I like: music, literature and science. I first took guitar lessons when I was around 11 years old, and learned some electric guitar techniques plus some music theory as a teen. Been playing semi regularly ever since, always trying to improve my knowledge of music theory and my electric guitar technique whenever there's time, which wasn't very often. I enjoy reading ancient and medieval literature, as well as really good Victorian and modern fiction. I am also a PhD student in a field that combines AI, cognitive science and robotics. I work with the boring part: mathematical models and theory and such. Sorry, no killer robots --yet. Since I started my PhD (and moved to another country) I have, ironically, more personal time. I used to spend hours commuting in public transportation and now I live 10 mins away from work. I am now using this newly found free time to play the guitar!

Music wise I like a lot of stuff: antique, classical, baroque, renaissance Lute music, opera, psychedelic rock, 80's rock, gothic rock, industrial, etc. I used to be *seriously* into metal in high school and throughout college. Nowadays I still listen to a lot of metal, mostly funeral doom, doom/death, stoner metal, some progressive but mostly any band with a good sound and good compositions. I'd rather listen to something good than something heavy. Preferably with some melody coming from more than 2 strings :p

I joined the forum to ask for help buying a new amp, but I might stick around. We'll see!

Welcome. And don't worry. We're all anti-social misfits here.

But we do play the guitar ... mostly ... sometimes.

    Welcome buddy.
There are lots of social misfits here (myself included) who obsess about guitars and science ... several of us bask in the glory of having science PhDs ('glory' ... yeah, right!) so you're in good company.
We should develop a sub-forum to make the killer robot a reality ... I'm in.
    Anyway. Welcome.

That was actually the first amp I considered. Then sized down to the DSL5C, but in demos found it too bright for my taste. In the end I went for an Orange Dark Terror. We'll see how it goes from there.

I've already met a few professors and colleagues who also play the guitar, or another instrument. In computer science there were always many musicians around. I'm pretty sure there is a connection between science and music.

Thanks! Staff/moderators aren't usually this nice!

Whereas anyone can be pushed, none of us mods sought to slake a thirst for power or secure an excuse to be a bastard. I am much the same as I was before I volunteered, three times, for the antiSPAM patrol—including the days during which my health problems make me accidentally dickish.

On the whole, this forum is one of the nicest and most welcoming guitar forums I have ever seen. I could easily name some other guitar forums, which I read only via search result, which are unnecessarily hateful.

If I had read this thread (which I haven't) I would probably welcome you to the family, I would also probably echo Sustainerplayers sentiment, had I read his comment (which I didn't) I may also say I have a lowly EMMT degree (which I wont)

Rob is really cool and helpful beyond the line of duty.

The other moderators are utter bastards.

Nah - not really. This is a great place - sensible moderated and lots of good fun and discussion.

If you want to waste some time on the net you might as well waste it here.

Just avoid the GAS thread, unless you have deep pockets.

You've caught them on a good day. :D

Do stick around, new blood is always welcome, maybe you can join in a forum jam in the future. ;) http://www.robchapman.tv/forum/threads/rcf-spring-jam-2017.36661/page-8#post-777980

Being a web novice, the only thing I would say is don't take everything at face value, there's a lot of piss taking that goes on, but is always in jest. :)

    Oh, and welcome. :)

Yeah I got a little wordy up there. Just in case:

    TL;DR:
new person, play the guitar, might stick around.

Damn the forum jam is a GREAT idea! Kind of fun seeing how everyone has their own sound and style that one way or another matches their choice of guitar.

And thanks for the tip. But don't worry, if anything I can't resist making fun of people who take life too seriously.
